Elizabeth Fry [f.7.4.2]

Elizabeth Fry was the second child of Elizabeth Brett & John Fry born February 18th, 1872 & christened April 7th, 1872 at Ifield, Sussex.

In 1881 Elizabeth was living with her parents, brothers & sisters at Peters Farm, Rusper, Sussex.

In 1891 Elizabeth (listed as Frey in Ancestry.co.uk) was one of 6 servants for the Timmis family at Stone Hall, Oxted, Surrey. The head of the household was Illius A Timmis, a civil engineer. Elizabeth was working as a scullery maid.

By 1901 Elizabeth had returned to live with her widowed mother at Soles Farm, Nuthurst, Horsham. Also there was her brother John & sisters Alice & Emily.

On April 18th, 1901 Elizabeth married Jesse James Hogsflesh at Nuthurst, Sussex. Jesse was born August 18th, 1863 at Newdigate, Surrey, the son of Elizabeth Charman & John Hogsflesh, a farmer. At the time of the census just prior to their wedding Jesse (listed as Hogsdash in Ancestry.co.uk) was living with his 2 brothers & 2 sisters & a nephew at Chaffolds Farm, Newdigate, Dorking, Surrey. He was working as a stockman on the farm.

In 1911 Elizabeth & Jesse were living at Newhouse Cottage, Newdigate, Dorking, Surrey where Jesse was farm labourer. They had a 5 year old son, Arthur, & 4 year old daughter, Elizabeth.

Jesse died in July 23rd, 1917, aged 52, at Newhouse Cottage.  Probate was granted on September 24th, 1917 in London to his wife Elizabeth.  Jesse’s effects were £276.5s.4d.

The children of Elizabeth Fry & Jesse James Hogsflesh were:

f.7.4.2.1 Arthur Hogsflesh born August 6th, 1905 at Dorking, Surrey

f.7.4.2.2 Elizabeth Hogsflesh born December 15th, 1906 at Dorking, Surrey; died April-June 1974 at Crawley, West Sussex

Elizabeth remarried on April 26th 1924, at St Mary, Holmwood, Surrey.  Her second husband was a widower, Arthur Longhurst, a gamekeeper.  A witness at the wedding was Bessie Hogsflesh, Elizabeth’s daughter.

Arthur died on January 9th 1939, aged 74, at 89 St Leonards Rd, Horsham, Sussex.  Administration of his estate was granted to widow Elizabeth & his effects were £122.3.6d.

The 1939 register shows widowed Elizabeth living at 89 St Leonards Rd, Horsham. Daughter Elizabeth was working as a domestic for R. Elliott-Cooper, KCB, a retired civil engineer, & family at Clock House, Cowfold, Horsham, Sussex.

Elizabeth died on June 18th, 1950 at 89 St Leonards Rd, Horsham, Sussex.  Probate was granted on August 4th, 1950 to daughter Elizabeth Hogsflesh, spinster, & nephew John Fry [f.7.4.1.1], motor engineer.  Her effects were £1,314.4s.6d.

Soon after her mother’s death daughter Elizabeth married Lesley E Elsley in July-September 1950 at Horsham, Sussex.
